The 24 Hour War

2016

The Ford versus Ferrari rivalry at Le Mans™ is one of the most famous battles in racing history. It started in 1963 when Henry Ford II tried to buy Ferrari to save the ailing Ford Motor Company, which was being crushed by GM and the Corvette on the track and at the dealerships. Ferrari was the most successful racing team in the world at that time.

After months of intense negotiation, Enzo Ferrari said no — refusing to allow Ford to interfere with what he loved the most: racing. Henry Ford II was furious and vowed to build a racecar that would dethrone Ferrari. Ford engineered a revolutionary racecar called the GT40. The battle would be at the most famous race in the world, The 24 Hours of Le Mans™, where Ferrari had reigned supreme for decades. In the 1960s only two teams ever won Le Mans™.

Shelby American

2019

SHELBY AMERICAN tells the story of automotive icon Carroll Shelby. Shelby started as a chicken farmer in East Texas and went on to become one of the winningest racing drivers in the history of American motorsports. When a tragic heart condition sidelined his racing career, Shelby reinvented himself as a manufacturer, creating the Shelby Cobra. The Cobra dominated American sports car racing from its inception, but Shelby’s goal was always to win internationally and beat Enzo Ferrari, who he had a personal vendetta against.

Henry Ford II noticed Shelby’s success and hired him to not only run Ford’s GT40 program, but also to beat Ferrari at the biggest race in the world — The 24 Hours of Le Mans. The Ford/Ferrari wars at Le Mans would become the most storied racing battles in automotive history, and Carroll Shelby was always center stage. To this day, Carroll Shelby is the only man in history to win in Le Mans as both a driver and a manufacturer.

Carroll Shelby came from humble beginnings working as a chicken farmer in rural Texas. He exploded into the auto-racing scene by beating all the top-tier drivers of the era and winning the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1959. All while still wearing his chicken-overalls. Carroll had a heart condition that nearly killed him, forcing him to retire from racing. He started Shelby American and assembled a ragtag team of hot-rodders to execute his vision of building groundbreaking sports cars like the Shelby Cobra. He also led Ford and the GT40 to multiple victories at Le Mans over Ferrari.

Shelby’s cars, driven by the greatest drivers in the history of racing, cemented his legacy. He is the only man in history to win Le Mans as both a driver and a manufacturer. And is still the only American auto-manufacturer to win the World Manufacturing Championship.

Yank Tanks

FEATURE DOCUMENTARY

YANK TANKS

2013

Yank Tanks is a first look at the phenomenon of classic American cars in Cuba.  Like an exotic, endangered species, these colorful cars roam around this island paradise trapped in a 1950’s time warp.  As beacons of individuality in a sea of government conformity they represent freedom for those who own them.  Owners who will do almost anything to keep them running.  Seeing these old cars in recent films and photographs one wonders how they have maintained them after decades with no spare parts and an embargo by the United States.  After repeated trips to Cuba, the Schendel brothers succeed in taking a close look into the underground world of Cuban cars, finding along the way a gallery of eccentric characters – the curators of the largest, living, automobile museum in the world.

Through interviews, the viewer is introduced to mechanics, parts Inventors, race car drivers, artists and owners who work daily on mechanical problems that most Americans would easily scrap a car for. Using beautiful shots of the vintage cars, contemporary Cuban music and never released footage from the Cuban Television Archive the film takes the journey into the surprising and sometimes uncharted territory of Yank Tank owners.

With humor and stunning visuals, Yank Tanks “throws open” the hood and suggests that private entrepreneurship is on the rise in Cuba, ironically concentrated in symbols of American freedom and ingenuity.  Ultimately, the viewer is given a portrait of a hard-working and resourceful island people who cherish American cars and take the phrase, “living with less” to a new level.  Timely and provocative, Yank Tanks will stimulate and entertain those who are interested in learning about an island at the crossroads of several cultures that have been off-limits for many years.
